M. C. Barton spent his early years in a rural mountainous region of Pennsylvania, where he learned to imagine what was behind the next tree, over the next hill … or in that dark place below that strange rocky outcrop. He began writing stories soon after he learned to put pen to paper, but knew he would have to get out and experience different kinds of people and places before he would be ready to write about the world … any world.
Many years later, after a career in the U.S. Marine Corps and other interesting experiences, he settled down on the windy coast of North Carolina, dusted off his writing desk, put aside his stack of short stories, and peered once again into those dark and mysterious places to write his first novel, Rodriguez and the Giant Killers.
FAQ
Q: Where did you come up with the idea for these stories?
A: The original story actually was born from a short piece I wrote one day when I was just messing around on the keyboard. I wrote, on a whim, what would eventually become the preface for this book, filed it away and forgot about it for several years. It was only some time later, when I found myself hopelessly stuck in the middle of another novel I was working on, that I ran across that single page. The rest of the story just happened to be ready to come out.
Q: Where do you get your ideas?
A: Everybody has stories to tell, we just don’t always know where we’ve stored them back amidst the rest of the clutter that makes up our life experiences. I’ve always been a reader, so I include all of the stories and styles and ideas that I’ve seen in other people’s work throughout my lifetime as “lifetime experiences.” You just have to dig around in there sometimes to uncover your own interpretation of an adventure.
Q: Where is Isladorada?
A: Isladorada is easy to find. Walk out your front door. Turn right and walk until you’re tired, turn right again, then again … and walk back home. Find your most comfortable chair, lean back, close your eyes. You’ll be there in a minute.
Q: Are you writing more Rodriguez books?
A: Rodriguez and his giant killers still have plenty to do, so, yes. I hope to have a third novel in the series by mid-2023.
Q: What happened to the rest of the Mountain Swords?
A: I don’t know … yet. Still waiting for Rodriguez to tell me. All I know for sure is that we haven’t heard the last about them.
Q: Where did the Mountain Swords come from?
A: We may never know. But I think they came from a mountain somewhere.
Q: What is going to happen to Morgimeer?
A: I’m waiting for Rodriguez to share that with me. He’s not back yet.
